The Psychology of Recovery from Vocal Injury and Overcoming the Fear of Re-injury

Mary Ann Kehler has spent two decades refining the initial college audition consultation that each of her hundreds of college-bound clients – and their parents – have participated in. It’s a 2-1/2 hour process and results in everyone in the room having a good sense of whether a high school student is likely to be a successful candidate for musical theatre, acting, or singer/songwriter college programs. Bass-ic Training: Essential Techniques for Low Male Voices: This course addresses common vocal challenges and training strategies for teachers of post-pubertal cis and trans basses and bass-baritones. We will listen to Classical and CCM basses and bass-baritones, and delve into the physical and acoustic factors that affect high-range singing for these low voices, with a focus on resonance tracking and appropriate registration strategies. Participants will learn to identify and manage predictable vocal transitions, aiming to help their students develop a balanced and sustainable voice across their range.

Karolina Borner-Gogolewska – Founder and CEO at the startup Vocaly. Vocaly is an app for vocal coaches and their students. Karolina’s greatest passion is music. She sings, writes songs and combines her passion for music with entrepreneurship. She has worked with startups and entrepreneurs at the top business school in CEE – Kozminski University. She was an editor at the music platform “Soulbowl” and she organized international gospel music workshops. Her MusicTech startup Vocaly won the TDJ Pitango Seed Competition 2 competing with over 200 startups and raised funding from an international VC fund TDJ Pitango Ventures.
Dr. Orietta Calcinoni – ENT and Phoniatrician, mostly interested in multidimensional approaches to occupational voice prevention and surveillance. Since 1987 in Teatro alla Scala, now working mostly about control of biological risk in singers and wind players and health prevention in Artists. Cofounder with Valentina Carlile (DO) of the Voice & Music Professionals Care Team (VMPCT). Member of Global Consortium for Chemosensory Research (GCCR) since March 2020, focusing smell & taste losses’ effects also on voice. Expert Member of the Committee for Safeguarding of Italian Opera Singing who got the UNESCO recognition in the list among non material world cultural heritage. Member of many scientific societies (UEP, IALP, CEORL HNS, AAO-HNS, …) and president 2022-2024 of Italian Association of Private Practice ENTs.
Aimee Geddes opened her voice studio in 2003 while a freshman in college at the ripe old age of 18. She has had a passion for the voice since her own teacher showed her the way and how to solve the vocal problems she encountered. She loves helping others discover their talents for music. She has a BA in Communication from Weber State University, where she also studied Musical Theater and Art. She has directed and choreographed musicals for High School, Elementary and middle school aged youth. She is the creator and host of the The Voice Teacher Podcast for IVTOM. Sam Johnson is a voice teacher originally from Salt Lake City, Utah, currently based in Austin,Texas. He is a full member, board member, mentor teacher, and Director of Education for IVTOM (International Voice Teachers of Mix), and has a degree in vocal performance from Westminster Colege. He spent 18 months teaching voice in Hong Kong, working with both amateur and professional singers. Sam now brings his international experience clients worldwide through Zoom. His focus on vocal technique can help singers of all levels reach their goals. In Hong Kong, Sam was an associate teacher at CSMA Studio, the premier vocal studio of the area. In addition to teaching private lessons at the studio he helped run many group classes, including choirs and musical theatre intensives. He also conducted the JP Morgan Managing Director’s Choir in 2013 and 2014, helpling to raise over $5.8 million HKD for charity. During his time as an IVTOM member, Sam has had the privilege of working privately with its master voice teachers, including Dean Kaelin, John Henny, Mark Baxter, and Teri Stock. At Westminster College he studied with Dr. Marc Reynolds. Sam aims to help his students become great msicians through great vocal technique. He has experience teaching a wide range of genres to students of all ages of backgrounds, including pop, musical theatre, R&B, and classical.
Dean Kaelin has been teaching voice for over 40 years and has taught well over 100,00 lessons. He has taught and conducted workshops throughout the world. He is the founder of Ivtom (The International Voice teachers of Mix)and served as President from 2009-2016. He has served as the Education Director for Ivtom as well as a Mentor Teacher. He trained with Seth Riggs and worked as his personal accompanist. He was a Level 5 Instructor in the Speech Level Singing Organization and served as the Point IMT with responsibility for worldwide education advancement of the technique. He has been the voice coach for Star Search Winners, American Idol finalists as well as the cast of High School Musical (including Olivia Rodrigo) and his students have performed on Broadway, signed major record deals and have performed at every major Theme Park in the U.S. He has a degree in Jazz Composition from the University of Utah and a Masters Degree from Brigham Young University. He was an Associate Professor of Music atWestminster College in Salt Lake City for 7 years. Dean is also a talented songwriter, musician, performer and arranger. He began his professional career at the age of 9 and has performed throughout the U.S., Europe and Africa. He has performed with Bette Midler, Bernadette Peters, Peter Gallagher, Leslie Ann Warren and many others. He has opened for George Strait, Dave Matthews, Train, the Goo Goo Dolls, Big Bad Voodoo Daddy and was a featured performer at the 2002 Winter Olympic Games. He has recorded 7 CDs of his own, and produced many for others. He wrote much of the music performed at the Day of Celebration, a conference of over 40,000 youth where a choir of 15,000 sang his music. He was also the Artistic Director for the Utah/Moscow games in 2004. As well as his pop and jazz career, he has also performed lead roles in several musicals. He plays over 12 instruments.
Mary Ann Kehler is best known for her work as a voice teacher and performance coach; she is also a theatre director, audition coach, and best-selling author. Her students include musical theatre professionals; pop recording artists; lead singers for rock, pop, country, and bluegrass bands; club musicians; singer/songwriters; worship leaders; voice teachers, and high school students auditioning for college musical theatre, acting, and singer/songwriter programs. She is skilled at voice rehabilitation and is a “go-to” for keeping professional voices working. Mary Ann is serving as President of International Voice Teachers of Mix and is an IVTOM Mentor Teacher. She happily travels the world, training voice teachers and helping singers, presenting in voice conferences and theatre education events. Mary Ann calls Denver, Colorado, USA home is equally enthralled by the Rocky Mountains and the New York Theatre District.
Dr. Richard Lissemore is a singing voice physiologist and practitioner, who educates singers, singing teachers, and voice pathologists through his online private studio. He holds a Ph.D. in Speech-Language-Hearing Sciences from The Graduate Center at The City University of New York, an Artist Diploma in opera from The Juilliard School, an M.M. in voice performance from Cincinnati’s College-Conservatory of Music, and a B.A. in microbiology and music from Rutgers University. He was fortunate to be mentored by two of the great pedagogue scientists of the twentieth century, Oren Brown and Donald Gray Miller. His work involves professional-level singing lessons, performance coaching, vocal technique rehabilitation, teacher coaching, career consultation, and college audition preparation. Dr. Dann Mitton is an independent voice teacher and researcher. His online studio serves cis and trans post-pubertal basses and bass-baritones wherever the internet reaches. A proud alumnus of prestigious programs like the Tanglewood Music Center, Aspen Music Center, and the Britten-Pears Young Artists Programme, Dann’s professional roles include Angelotti, Don Alfonso, Bartolo, Rossini’s Basilio, and Sarastro. He created and co-moderates the New Forum for Professional Voice Teachers (NFPVT), and Lyric Diction and Linguistics (LDL) on Facebook. Kathe S. Perez, MA, CCC-SLP, founder of Exceptional Voice, Inc., is a certified a speech-language pathologist andhas been working in the field since 1986. She is an internationally recognized expert in the careand training of the human voice. Kathe has been providing trans* voice training since2000 and has helped thousands gain confidence in the way they speak.
Dominika Plonka – Vocal instructor, folk singer, flutist from Gliwice, Poland. IVTOM Mentor, IVTOM European Board Member, founder and president of the Mix Singers Association in Poland. Dominika studied at the Academy of Music in Katowice (Master Degree) and Sound Engineering in Krakow. In 1994 she founded her first band. In 1995 she started teaching singing and writing vocal arrangements for a musical theatre “Teatr A”, with which she played over 300 spectacles in Europe as flutist and singer. In 2001 she founded folk band ‘SASIEDZI’. With this group for last 23 years she played over 600 concerts in Europe and USA. After years of teaching in different institutions, she founded her own studio on 2013. Dominika travels a lot, giving lessons and vocal workshops to singers and voice teachers. She also organizes many events: workshops, teacher trainings and voice conferences in Poland.
Dr. Jon Skidmore, Psy.D., is a performance psychologist and faculty member at Brigham Young University’s School of Music. He teaches “The Psychology of Music Performance.” For decades he has helped performing artists develop the mental skills to find freedom on stage and in life. His motto is Risk, Fail, Risk again!
